Wave-Powered Sustainable Desalination Solution

Water scarcity is among the greatest challenges of the 21st
century. Oneka has an ambitious mission: making the oceans a
sustainable and affordable source of freshwater.

Zero GHG
Emission Solutions

By using mechanical buoys rather than conventional systems, we avoid emitting
any type of greenhouse gasses. The Oneka system does not require electricity,
fuel or solar panels for the desalination process. Only waves of decent height are required
to produce drinking water.

What we do

We combine the ocean’s seawater with its own wave energy to provide freshwater to coastal populations & industries without compromising the environment.

Our solution increases resilience to climate change while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and water costs.

The Benefits

All-in-one solution

Oneka offers an all-in-one desalination system. Everything needed to produce drinking water from seawater is included in the Oneka system. This includes offshore pumping through filters and reverse osmosis membranes to obtain high quality drinking water. The buoys are designed for limited and simple maintenance.

Zero GHG emissions

By using mechanical buoys, we do not emit any greenhouse gasses. Compared with conventional systems, Oneka saves 1 tonne of CO2e per year for every m3 of water produced every day.

Zero electricity

The Oneka system does not require electricity, fuel or solar panels. Only waves of decent height are required to produce drinking water. By choosing Oneka as your water supplier, you can save on your water costs compared to conventional desalination where the energy costs can represent up to 60% of operation costs.

Zero land space

Oneka’s freshwater technology does not require obtaining land-based real estate, which is required for land-based solutions, particularly when compared to solar-powered desalination. Oneka simply connects the fresh water pipe to the water distribution network or to a water storage tank. We believe that preserving coastal land is of high importance. By limiting land usage, our system significantly reduces the impact on deforestation, as compared to traditional and solar energy driven desalination solutions.

Eco-friendly brine

The brine we discharge has a negligible impact on marine flora and fauna since its salt concentration is slightly higher (+30-50%) than that of the ocean. As each buoy independently discharges its own brine high in an active water column it is also quickly returned to ambient salinity.

Scalable & modular system

Oneka’s system can easily follow the client’s evolving water needs. There is no need to build a new desalination plant infrastructure or large installations in advance. The volume water produced by Oneka’s system can simply be adjusted by changing the number of units in the buoy array. Any procedure needed to modify the buoy array is done by Oneka and doesn’t require any involvement of the client.

Safer water intake

The intake system is designed to protect marine life. 60-micron inlet holes prevent damage to ecosystems. Backwash reduces maintenance and protects mesh.

Promotes growth of marine life

Our experience has demonstrated that the anchors used by the Oneka buoys are quickly populated by marine life. Oneka anchors are generally placed on barren seabeds. We have observed that they seem to encourage the growth of marine life over time.
