Who we are

Oneka Technologies, a growing company from Sherbrooke, Canada, with operation sites in Florida and soon Chile, has the mission to make the oceans a sustainable, accessible and affordable source of fresh water. To achieve this, the Oneka team has developed a technology that produces potable water from desalination buoys powered exclusively by wave energy. This technology will enable coastal communities and industries to obtain fresh water produced in an environmentally friendly and economical manner. 

Job description

The VP of engineering will be a key person in the organization and will work in close partnership with the COO & CEO initially.

His/her role will be primarily to ensure a motivating and efficient engineering department that is able to deliver quality products to the field operations’ team in time for the company’s plans. This person will initially overlook the manufacturing department as well, which will eventually be attributed to a new person.

  • Build, manage and mobilize technical teams including engineers & product developers;
  • Help build capacity of company to design, build and move into manufacturing;
  • Establish company-wide management systems (with CEO);
  • Agree and build engineering OKRs, key metrics, deadlines;
  • Hold, build and share company IP & technical knowledge;
  • Manage and attract key technical partners and contractors including product developers, manufacturers, OEM;
  • Understand the various products, technologies, projects and make sense of priorities and how it all fits together (challenge the lead product developers, project managers and their engineers too);
  • Track and address the competitive landscape;
  • Oversee evolution of Oneka technical spaces, tools and workflows;
  • Foster a culture of excellence, commitment and connection for the engineering team;
  • Can include involvement in the company’s strategy, growth plans and related activities.

Requirements & desired profile

  • Desire to have a lasting impact on the planet;
  • Managed industrial products development including:
    • Product development roadmaps;
    • Reporting;
    • Standard industrial practices (RFPs, RFIs, POs, WOs…)
  • Lead transition from MVP to fully scaled commercialized products;
  • Lead teams of at least 10 people;
  • Managed budgets of $5M+
  • Worked in an entrepreneurial environment,
    with high company growth;
  • Experience in medium to large companies;
  • Engineer (or related, like naval architect, etc.);
  • Proficient in English and French basics;
  • Assets: marine environment and international experience, renewables (wind, solar or related), desalination or water treatment technologies, industrial processes, power hydraulics, project financing, venture capital experience, participated in raising non-dilutive financing (as SDTC, DOE, H2020, etc).

  • Salary & company stock options to be discussed;
  • 80% on site in Canada, Qc, Sherbrooke;
  • Ability to travel at least 10% on sites;
